Developed by Charles 'Chuck' Zimmerman in the late 1970's Columbus has become one of the most widely grown alpha varieties grown in the US.
Bright spice and citrus in early picked Columbus makes way for a deep pungency in later-picked crop.
Columbus is one of a trio of varieties along with Tomahawk and Zeus that are sold or marketed as 'CTZ'. These three varieties with very high alpha properties were all produced at the same time and sold to different grower groups. Since then it has been proven that Columbus and Tomahawk are the same variety (by gas chromatograph) and Zeus is so similar that it is indistinguishable from the other two in the finished product.
